Leading When the Subject Matter Experts Test

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

I will look into some of the IT projects, I've done and talk about how to lead and coach Subject Matter Experts in testing, what motivates them, and what tools to use and testing heuristics I've seen work.

#Who are the subject matter experts?
In large customer projects, I often find that testers are domain experts, not dedicated test professionals. Many large organizations insists their own people do all testing.

Quite often, I have found myself as a test manager the only software testing specialist on the project team. This transforms my role from test management to leadership, coaching, and facilitation of testing being performed by the SMEs.

This has lead me to shape my opinions on the following questions:
- How can we coach people to perform testing?
- How do we avoid shallow checking and entice exploration?
- How do we train them?
- What testing techniques work with domain experts?
- How much testing vocabulary do we need to teach them?

At the bottom line, leadership is key.

# leading the testing
I have found it meaningful to apply lessons learned from leading volunteers in a youth group organisation. I find that scouts and businesses experts have surprisingly similar needs of appreciative and motivating style of leadership.

# not just manual testing
It has long been a challenge to add automation to business expert-based testing of commercial standard applications. With tools like Robot Desktop automation I find we can solve some of the challenges, of not having the software code to interact with.
